
A. In September 2004, I got divorced. I had written short films and short plays before but never performed and my divorce left me feeling occasionally devastated and occasionally liberated. On one of those liberating days, I signed up to do a performance workshop. I performed a 2 minute monologue and 6 months later decided I wanted to do stand up.

Workshops and courses can be useful but there’s no better apprenticeship that immersing yourself in comedy – go to gigs, watch other comics, write jokes that make you laugh, record your early gigs so you can play them back and learn from your mistakes, take a notepad or voice recorder everywhere so you don’t forget ideas.
